The Okavango Delta & Moremi Game Reserve
The Okavango Delta in Botswana is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating, extraordinary, and wildest landscapes in Africa. With an area of 20,000 square kilometers, the wetland in the northwest of the state is the largest inland delta in the world. It is fed by the Okavango River, which at 1,700 kilometers is the third-longest river in Africa. It rises in the mountains of Angola.
The Okavango Delta changes its face depending on the season. During the rainy season, the floodwaters transform the Okavango Delta into a labyrinth of channels, offering ideal living conditions for animals and plants. The result of the abundance of water is biodiversity that can hardly be surpassed. According to official figures, the Okavango Delta is home to 64 species of reptiles, 444 species of birds, 122 species of mammals, 71 species of fish, and around 1,300 different plants. Hard to imagine right? The Okavango Delta has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
The Moremi Game Reserve is more than 5000 km² in size and is intended to protect the transition zone between the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta. There are permanent watercourses and permanent lagoons, some areas are completely flooded and swamps are formed. The waters are very clean and clear, with trees lining the banks. The area presents itself as a bit of paradise, where wide-open grasslands alternate with parkland, which in turn slowly merges with the Kalahari mainland. The dry landscape there is characterized by the big game, which feels at home in the mopane forests, sand fields, and acacia savannahs.
